Unruly Heroes is a gorgeous 2D plat former that you’d think would devolve into style. Over substance but manages to pull you in with fun boss fights and a great roster of move sets from the 4 playable characters. All of which can be play with up to 4 players in co-op or a competitive bonus mode. The game has great art with serviceable sound design and music. While the backgrounds look nice, they are mute, most likely to not get mixed up in the foreground. One of the bigger gripes I have is with the voice acting. Some lines are deliver fine while others feel almost cringe-y with poor attempts at comic relief. The game is a 2D brawler mix with platforming, problem solving, and puzzles. Levels are a bit inconsistent in what puzzles and problem solving loops they want to present but the game manages. To switch between each genre and still maintain freshness without feeling too scatterbrained or repetitive. And that’s something I REALLY love in a game: Variety. When you’re getting bore of puzzle solving, you’re fighting enemies with fun combos. When the level-specific challenge – like possessing a wolf and doing platforming puzzles – starts to get play out, you use that same puzzle solving solution to fight a boss. It’s great. But not only are there some annoying glitches like characters locking up or unable to progress through a level but also trial and error.
