Planet Nomads is early access and constantly under development, updates every week or two and has come a long way since the kick starter. Last week they added colourising built blocks for example. I can recommend it for several hours of interesting play right now and there is good reason to believe there is more and better to come. This game perfectly scratches that itch between Lego-like granular level building, but within a survival world. So, you need to build in order to survive in this game, but exactly what you build and how you go about it is up to you. Not every survival building game lets you do this.
However, at this point (Nov 2018) the game remains buggy. For example, all of my deaths have been due to the occasional glitches of either being thrown super high into the air, a vehicle suddenly bouncing all over the place and crushing me underneath, or some weird glitch involving harvested trees falling on me.
