Following Senua on a journey into Helheim with hopes of rescuing her dead lover, we are actually following her deep within her own mind and witnessing her descent into madness. With psychosis as Hellblade’s central theme, I was constantly questioning what was real and what wasn’t. What was a Celtic warrior doing in a Norse realm? How much could I trust the voices of the Furies? How much could I trust the game’s threat of permadeath? How much of the game was a delusion or just a manifestation of Senua’s mind? Would I even get answers.

In the end it didn’t matter, because it was all real for Senua. Unreliable narrators, voices that suggest conflicting thoughts to make you doubt yourself, seeing and hearing things that no one else can see, feeling alone… the game puts you in Senua’s frame of mind and makes you feel fear, dread, anxiety. I have never been so deeply affected by a game and a singular character as I have by Hellblade, and Senua.
